The capital of East Timor is Dili, which is also the biggest city of the country. Flights to East Timor usually go to Dili. Another important town is Lospalos. East Timor has been a Portuguese colony since the 1500s, but the Portuguese left the country in 1974. Shortly after, Indonesia invaded the area populated by a catholic majority and installed a bloody regime. Only Australia recognized any Indonesian rights. After the Peace Nobel Prize has been granted surprisingly in 1996 to Bishop Belo und José Ramos-Horta from East Timor and Indonesia's dictator Suharto was forced to withdraw in 1998, East Timor gained back its independence in 2002. Many Indonesians have left the country in the years that followed.
After the independence the Eastern Timorans asked themselves which language should be taken for official. Usually this is not a big deal, but in East Timor yes. Tetum, the local native language, was prohibited and suppressed under the Indonesian occupation, so that after more than 20 years young people do not speak it any more. Indonesian (bahasa Indonesia) which is widely spoken today, had been introduced by force so that there is a strong movement to get rid of that language. Portuguese would be an alternative, for there are many documents from before 1974 in this language, but too few people who speak it. English is spoken by few people too, but too few, and Australia had been the only country that recognized the Indonesian occupation. East Timor is currently trying to re-establish Tetum, the first step is teaching teachers to teach the language, while preliminarily, Portuguese serves as the second official language. English and Indonesian have the status of semi-official languages.
Tourism is still of low importance in East Timor, the country has the come clear itself before investing in a tourism industry. After the independence, UN forces remained in East Timor to guarantee security. We would appreciate more detailed information, also about tourism, flights, or individual tours to East Timor.

This is our Map of the World with original scripts (original size 70 x 100 cm), from which the detailed map shown above has been cut out. The numbers of city inhabitants and vegetational zones were researched by hand for every country, by using the sources listed below. This procedure prevented the map from containing traditional errors provoked by simply copying such information from previous maps.

The map can be ordered for 11.50 Euros (+ postage and packing) at www.wissenladen.de.

Sources on which the information contained in this map is based:

The vegetational base map was aligned with satellite pictures from Google Earth.

The official names of the countries are quite well researched at www.geonames.de.

Also here you can find information on the geography of many countries: www.geographixx.de.

The numbers of inhabitants of the cities were taken from www.citypopulation.de.

And the mountain peak altitudes were largely derived form www.peakbagger.com.
