Suriname's capital is Paramaribo, which is also the biggest city of the country. Flights to Suriname usually go to Paramaribo. Another important town is Nieuw Nickerie. Suriname is a small country in South America between the rivers Corantijn in the west and Maroni in the east.
The official language of Suriname is Dutch. This language however, which is tought in schools, is only used in the army. The coloquial language in Suriname is Taki-taki (or Talki-talki), a mixture between English, Dutch, Hindi and several native languages. This language, which does not appear in official language lists but is called Taki-Taki by the speakers themselves, is also understood on Guyana. Inside the coutry several more native languages are spoken, none of which has official status.
Tourism is of lower importance in Suriname. Large parts of the coutry are controlled by local armed forces. For example it is not possible for tourists to go from French Guyana to Paramaribo on a terrestrial way. The reason for this chaotic situation is to be seen in historical developments: only those people who successfully managed to escape from the tortureous slave works in the costal region into the hinterland, survived in this country. Several of these armed groups have never surrendered until today. We would appreciate more detailed information, also about tourism, flights, or individual tours to Suriname.

This is our Map of the World with original scripts (original size 70 x 100 cm), from which the detailed map shown above has been cut out. The numbers of city inhabitants and vegetational zones were researched by hand for every country, by using the sources listed below. This procedure prevented the map from containing traditional errors provoked by simply copying such information from previous maps.
